Waterproofing Specialists

Waterproofing is not optional — it's the foundation of any tiling job in a wet area. In Queensland, the QBCC requires that waterproofing of wet areas, balconies, and pool surrounds meet Australian Standard AS 3740. Avid Tiling holds a QBCC licence for waterproofing and always applies it correctly.

We use membrane systems suited to each substrate and exposure: liquid-applied membranes for bathrooms and laundries, sheet membranes for balconies and elevated outdoor areas, and cementitious systems for pool surrounds. The correct cure time is always observed before any tiles are laid over the membrane.

A poor waterproofing job creates a ticking clock — water ingress behind tiles leads to adhesive failure, mould growth, and structural damage that's expensive to remediate. Investing in quality waterproofing protects the tile installation and the building structure for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waterproofing — Common Questions

Is waterproofing required for all bathrooms in Queensland?

Yes. Under Queensland Building Code, all wet areas (shower recesses, baths, laundries) must be waterproofed to AS 3740 by a QBCC licensed contractor.

How long does waterproofing take to dry before tiling?

Liquid membrane systems typically require a minimum of 24 hours cure time before tiling, with multiple coats applied. We always follow the manufacturer's specifications and never rush this step.

What is the difference between liquid and sheet membrane waterproofing?

Liquid membranes are applied by brush or roller and are standard for bathrooms and laundries. Sheet membranes (like Schluter Kerdi) are more rigid and better suited to elevated outdoor areas and balconies.

Can you waterproof a balcony that already has tiles?

If the existing tiles are removed, yes. You cannot effectively waterproof over existing tiles — the membrane needs to bond to the substrate. We can advise on the scope of work for each situation.

Do you provide a QBCC waterproofing certificate?

Yes. All waterproofing work is completed under our QBCC licence and documentation is available for your records and for future property sale purposes.

How do you waterproof a pool surround?

Pool surround waterproofing uses a cementitious or polyurethane membrane system rated for permanent water contact. The bond beam and coping areas are treated separately to handle expansion and contraction.
