Outdoor Tiling Specialists

Outdoor tiling in Queensland needs to handle extreme heat, heavy rain, UV exposure, and the movement that comes with Australian soil conditions. Avid Tiling selects materials and installation methods specifically suited to Brisbane's climate — not the same approach applied to indoor jobs.

We install non-slip outdoor tiles for patios, pool surrounds, alfresco areas, and driveways across Brisbane. Porcelain with a minimum R10 slip rating is standard for pool edges and wet entertainment areas. All adhesives and grouts are selected for external exposure.

Waterproofing is often required under outdoor tiles — particularly on elevated decks, balconies, and pool surrounds. Avid Tiling holds a QBCC licence for waterproofing and handles this as part of a complete outdoor tile installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Outdoor Tiling — Common Questions

What tile slip rating do I need for a pool surround?

The Australian standard recommends a minimum R11 slip rating for pool surrounds and wet zones, and R10 for covered alfresco areas. We only supply tiles that meet the relevant rating for the area.

Can tiles be laid on a timber deck?

Tiles can be laid on a structurally sound timber deck using a decoupling membrane system (like Ditra or similar). This allows for the natural movement of the timber without cracking the tile.

What happens to outdoor tiles in Queensland heat?

Properly selected porcelain tiles have very low expansion coefficients and handle Queensland temperatures well. Movement joints (expansion gaps) are always incorporated into our outdoor tile installations.

Do I need waterproofing under my patio tiles?

If the area is over living space or an enclosed area, yes — QBCC-compliant waterproofing is required. For ground-level patios, it depends on the substrate. We assess each job individually.

How do I clean and maintain outdoor tiles?

Most outdoor porcelain tiles only require a regular hose-down and occasional light scrub with a pH-neutral cleaner. Natural stone requires periodic resealing. We advise on maintenance at handover.

Can you tile around existing garden beds and landscaping?

Yes. We cut tiles to fit around existing garden beds, drainage points, and any fixed structures. This is all planned in the layout before we start cutting.
