Cracked, missing and discoloured grout repaired and colour-matched

Fix it properly. Not just cover it up.

Cracked or missing grout isn't just cosmetic — it allows water to penetrate behind tiles, leading to structural damage, mould growth and loose tiles over time. Addressing it early is always less expensive than ignoring it.

Dave removes damaged grout, prepares the substrate and fills with fresh grout matched as closely as possible to the original colour. Discoloured but structurally sound grout can be treated with a grout colourant for a uniform, refreshed look without full replacement.

Repair work can be combined with a deep clean and sealing in a single visit for a complete tile restoration result.

Don't ignore cracked grout in wet areas

In bathrooms and showers, cracked grout allows water behind the tiles. Over time this saturates the substrate, causes tiles to loosen and can result in mould growth inside the wall cavity. A grout repair job is far less expensive than a full bathroom retile.

/ How it works

The repair process

A proper grout repair isn't just filling a crack — here's what's involved.

01

Damage Assessment

Dave identifies all damaged sections — cracks, voids, missing grout — and assesses whether targeted repair or full regrout is the appropriate solution for your situation.

02

Grout Removal

Damaged and loose grout is carefully removed from affected joints using an oscillating tool or grout saw without damaging adjacent tiles or the substrate.

03

Colour Matching

New grout is selected to match the existing colour as closely as possible. Dave discusses the expected colour match outcome with you upfront — there may be some variation between aged and fresh grout.

04

Fresh Grout Application

New grout is pressed firmly into clean, prepared joints, tooled to a consistent profile and excess material removed from tile faces before it cures.

05

Clean-up & Sealing

New grout is cleaned and cured, then optionally sealed to protect the fresh surface. Dave advises on curing time before the area can be wetted again.

/ Questions

Common questions about grout repair

Can cracked grout be repaired or does it all need replacing?
In most cases, cracked or missing grout can be repaired without removing all existing grout. Dave removes the damaged sections and fills with fresh grout matched to the original colour. Full regrout is only necessary when most of the grout is degraded or the colour match is no longer viable.
How do I know if my grout needs repairing?
Signs that grout needs repair include visible cracks or gaps in the grout lines, grout that crumbles or powders when touched, areas where grout is completely missing, persistent dark staining that doesn't respond to cleaning, and grout that feels soft or sounds hollow when tapped.
Can you match the colour of my existing grout?
In most cases, yes. Dave carries a wide range of grout colours and can mix to achieve close matches. There may be some variation between new and aged grout — Dave will discuss the likely outcome with you before starting work so there are no surprises.
Is cracked grout a structural problem?
It can be. Cracked grout allows water to penetrate behind tiles, particularly in wet areas like showers and around baths. Over time this can cause tiles to loosen, substrate damage and mould growth behind the tiles. Addressing grout cracks promptly is worthwhile.
How long does grout repair take?
Repair of specific areas typically takes 1 to 3 hours. New grout needs to cure before it can be wetted or sealed — Dave will advise the curing time on the day, typically 24 hours for light use and 72 hours before sealing.
My grout is just discoloured — can it be fixed without replacing?
Yes, in many cases. If the grout is structurally sound but stained or discoloured, professional deep cleaning can restore a significant amount of the original appearance. If the discolouration is permanent, a grout colourant can be applied over clean existing grout to restore a consistent look without full replacement.
What causes grout to crack?
Grout cracking is most commonly caused by normal building movement (seasonal expansion and contraction), inadequate substrate support beneath tiles, tiles that were installed without movement joints, or grout that was mixed or applied incorrectly at installation.
Is grout repair worth it before selling a property?
Absolutely. Cracked and stained grout is one of the most commonly cited issues in property inspections and buyer walkthroughs. A grout repair and clean before listing is a high-value, low-cost improvement that makes bathrooms and kitchens look significantly better in photos and during inspections.
