Sliding Door FAQs

What types of timber sliding doors do you install?
We install cavity sliders (doors that disappear into the wall), barn-style sliding doors (surface-mounted on an exposed track), and standard bypass sliding doors. All in timber — solid timber or engineered timber depending on the application and finish preference.
What is a cavity slider and how does it work?
A cavity slider is a door that slides into a pocket inside the wall rather than swinging open. The door travels along a top-mounted track into a framed cavity within the wall stud. When open, the door is completely hidden inside the wall. This is ideal for areas where swing clearance is limited — ensuites, laundries, robes, and narrow hallways.
What is a barn-style sliding door?
A barn door is a surface-mounted sliding door — it slides along a visible track mounted above the door opening, in front of the wall. Unlike a cavity slider, no wall modification is needed, which makes it easier to retrofit. Barn doors are popular in contemporary interiors and outdoor living connections.
Can sliding doors be made in solid timber?
Yes. Solid timber sliding doors are available and look excellent, especially for barn-style applications. For cavity sliders, engineered timber is often recommended because it's more dimensionally stable in the confined cavity environment, but solid timber is an option for the right conditions.
What wall preparation is needed for a cavity slider?
Cavity sliders require a double-stud framed cavity within the wall to house the door when open. In new construction, this is built in from the start. In renovations, it involves cutting into the existing wall, reconfiguring the framing, installing the cavity frame kit, then re-lining the wall on both sides. Dave manages the full process.
Are timber sliding doors suitable for external applications?
Solid timber can be used for external sliding doors in sheltered locations, but it requires appropriate species selection and a quality finish system that can handle weather exposure. Dave will advise on the best timber and finish for your specific application.
What hardware do you use for sliding doors?
We use quality commercial-grade sliding door hardware from reputable Australian suppliers. Track systems, rollers, and pull handles are selected to suit the door weight and application. Hardware quality is the most important factor in long-term sliding door performance.
Can you install a sliding door where there is currently a hinged door?
Yes — this is a common conversion. For a barn-style installation, the existing frame can often be retained. For a cavity slider, the wall needs to be opened and a cavity frame installed. Dave will assess the existing wall construction and give you a clear quote for the conversion.
