Questions about hardscaping

What hardscaping services do you offer?

Hardscaping covers the built, structural elements of a garden. We build retaining walls, garden beds and edging, paved patios and pathways, and we install artificial grass. We also handle earthworks and fence construction. These elements give a garden its shape and usable space — and done properly, they're what makes a landscape last.

Do I need a retaining wall, or just garden edging?

It comes down to whether you're holding back soil or simply separating areas. A retaining wall is needed where there's a change in level — a slope, a terrace, or a garden that needs stepping so it's usable. Garden edging is a lighter treatment that defines beds and keeps lawn and mulch apart. When we quote we'll assess your site and recommend what the space actually needs, rather than over-building.

What materials do you use for retaining walls?

We build retaining walls in timber, sleepers and stone, choosing the material to suit the height of the wall, the look you want and the conditions of the site. On past projects we've stepped sloped gardens with a series of retainers and craned heavy base material over existing walls. During your quote we'll walk the site and recommend the right approach for a wall that holds up for the long term.

Can you build on a sloped or difficult site?

Yes — sloped and awkward sites are a big part of what we do. We've handled steep backyard orchards, post-renovation yards full of unsuitable soil, and sites where old concrete turned up mid-job. We use earthworks, retaining and proper site preparation to turn difficult ground into level, usable garden space. A site visit lets us scope the work accurately before we quote.

Is artificial grass a good option for shaded areas?

It can be an excellent option. Natural lawn struggles in heavily shaded spots and high-traffic areas, and that's exactly where artificial grass earns its place — a consistently green, low-maintenance surface that doesn't need mowing or watering. It's popular for entertaining areas, courtyards and pathways. We'll talk through whether it suits your space when we quote.

How long does a retaining wall or paved area take?

Timeframes vary with the size and complexity of the job. A straightforward edging or small paved area can be done in a day or two, while larger retaining walls, earthworks and full hardscape transformations run over several days to a few weeks. When we provide your quote we'll give you a realistic timeframe for your specific project so you can plan around it.

How is a hardscaping project quoted?

We quote each hardscaping job individually. Because retaining, paving and earthworks depend so much on site conditions, we always visit the property first, assess access and ground conditions, then provide a detailed written quote covering materials and labour. There are no surprises — you'll know the cost before we start.
