House Rewiring Services

Wiring does not last forever. In older Brisbane homes, decades-old cabling can become brittle, undersized for modern appliances, or simply unsafe. Rewiring replaces ageing or damaged wiring with modern cable that meets current standards — reducing fire and shock risk and giving your home the capacity it needs. Speedy Electrical carries out partial and full rewiring with minimal disruption, planning the work carefully so your household keeps running as smoothly as possible.

Rewiring — Questions Answered

Practical answers for Brisbane customers considering rewiring.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Warning signs include frequent tripping, flickering lights, discoloured or warm power points, a burning smell, old fabric or rubber-insulated cabling, and a switchboard still using ceramic fuses. Homes built several decades ago often have wiring that was never designed for today's appliances and electronics. If you notice any of these signs, or your home has not had its wiring assessed in many years, it is worth having a licensed electrician inspect it and advise whether rewiring is needed.

What is the difference between a full and partial rewire?

A full rewire replaces all the wiring throughout the property, which is common for very old homes or major renovations. A partial rewire targets only the circuits or areas that are unsafe, undersized or no longer compliant — for example, replacing the kitchen and bathroom circuits while leaving sound wiring in place. After inspecting your home we will explain which approach makes the most sense for your situation, balancing safety, budget and disruption.

How disruptive is rewiring a home?

Rewiring does involve accessing walls, ceilings and floors, so there is some disruption. However, we plan the work carefully and stage it so your home remains as liveable as possible throughout. We discuss timing with you in advance, work room by room where practical, and keep you informed at each stage. Our goal is to complete the job efficiently and tidily, with as little interruption to your household as we can manage.

Will rewiring make my home safer?

Yes. Old wiring is one of the more common contributors to electrical fires and shock incidents in ageing homes. Replacing brittle, undersized or damaged cabling with modern cable, paired with circuit breakers and safety switches, significantly reduces those risks. Rewiring also gives your home the electrical capacity to safely run modern appliances, which old systems were never designed for.

Can you rewire a home while we still live in it?

In most cases, yes. While a full rewire is easiest in an empty home, many rewires are carried out while families remain living there. We stage the work, isolate only the circuits being worked on, and restore power to liveable areas at the end of each day where possible. We will talk through the practicalities with you before starting so you know what to expect.

How is a rewiring job priced?

Rewiring is quoted after we assess your home, because the cost depends on the size of the property, how much wiring needs replacing, access to walls and ceilings, and whether a switchboard upgrade is included. We provide a clear, detailed quote so you understand the scope and the cost before any work begins. We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden surprises.

Do you handle the switchboard as part of a rewire?

Usually, yes. A rewire and a switchboard upgrade go hand in hand — there is little benefit in modern circuits feeding into an outdated board. We typically recommend renewing the switchboard with modern circuit breakers and safety switches as part of the project, so the whole electrical system works together safely and reliably. We will include this in your quote and explain the benefits.
