Emergency Electrical Services

Are you available for emergency electrical work after hours?

Yes. Speedy Electrical operates a 24/7 emergency electrical service across Brisbane and the Northside suburbs, including weekends and public holidays. If you have lost power, can smell burning, or have sparking or exposed wiring, you can call us at any hour. An experienced electrician will talk you through any immediate safety steps and head to your property as quickly as possible to make the situation safe and restore power.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Treat anything that poses a fire or shock risk as an emergency. That includes burning smells from outlets or the switchboard, visible sparks, scorch marks, buzzing power points, exposed or damaged wiring, a switchboard that keeps tripping, and full or partial loss of power. Storm and water damage to electrical systems also qualifies. If you are unsure whether something is urgent, it is safest to call and describe what you are seeing so we can advise you.

What should I do while I wait for the electrician?

If it is safe to do so, switch off power at the main switch on your switchboard to remove the risk. Keep people and pets well away from any sparking, smoking or exposed wiring, and do not touch anything that feels hot or looks damaged. Avoid using water near electrical equipment. If you can smell burning and cannot find the source, leave the area. Our team will give you specific guidance for your situation when you call.

Residential Electrical Services

What residential electrical work does Speedy Electrical cover?

We cover the full range of home electrical work for Brisbane households. That includes installing power points, lighting, ceiling fans and USB outlets, upgrading switchboards, fitting safety switches, fault finding, rewiring, and electrical work for renovations and extensions. We also handle smoke alarm installation and urgent repairs. Whether it is a small one-off job or a larger project, our licensed electricians can advise on the safest and most practical approach for your home.

Do you provide free quotes for home electrical jobs?

Yes. We provide no-obligation quotes for residential electrical work so you can make an informed decision before committing. For straightforward jobs we can often give clear guidance quickly, and for larger projects such as renovations or rewiring we will assess your home and provide a detailed quote. Our aim is transparent, upfront pricing with no hidden fees, so you always know what you are paying for.

Will my home be left tidy after the work?

Absolutely. We know that having electricians in your home is disruptive, so we take care to work cleanly and respectfully. Our team protects your floors and surfaces where needed, keeps the work area contained, and cleans up properly once the job is finished. We treat your home the way we would want our own treated — leaving it tidy, safe and ready to use.

Rewiring

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Warning signs include frequent tripping, flickering lights, discoloured or warm power points, a burning smell, old fabric or rubber-insulated cabling, and a switchboard still using ceramic fuses. Homes built several decades ago often have wiring that was never designed for today's appliances and electronics. If you notice any of these signs, or your home has not had its wiring assessed in many years, it is worth having a licensed electrician inspect it and advise whether rewiring is needed.

What is the difference between a full and partial rewire?

A full rewire replaces all the wiring throughout the property, which is common for very old homes or major renovations. A partial rewire targets only the circuits or areas that are unsafe, undersized or no longer compliant — for example, replacing the kitchen and bathroom circuits while leaving sound wiring in place. After inspecting your home we will explain which approach makes the most sense for your situation, balancing safety, budget and disruption.

How disruptive is rewiring a home?

Rewiring does involve accessing walls, ceilings and floors, so there is some disruption. However, we plan the work carefully and stage it so your home remains as liveable as possible throughout. We discuss timing with you in advance, work room by room where practical, and keep you informed at each stage. Our goal is to complete the job efficiently and tidily, with as little interruption to your household as we can manage.

Switchboard Inspections

Why should I get my switchboard inspected?

Your switchboard distributes and protects every electrical circuit in your property, so its condition directly affects your safety. Over years of service, boards can develop loose connections, worn breakers, overloaded circuits and outdated components. An inspection catches these issues before they cause outages, damage or fire. It is especially worthwhile for older boards, properties that have had additions over time, and homes or businesses where the board has never been formally assessed.

What does a switchboard inspection involve?

Our electrician carries out a full visual inspection of the board, then tests the wiring, circuit breakers and circuits for wear and safe load handling. We check safety switches by pressing the test button and confirming trip times, verify the earthing system meets Australian standards, and check that neutral bars and connections are secure. We photograph any defects and provide a written report explaining what we found and what, if anything, we recommend.

How often should switchboards be checked?

There is no single fixed interval, but a periodic check every few years is sensible for most properties, and sooner if you notice problems. As a guide for safety switches, the test button should be pressed roughly every six months and trip-time testing carried out periodically. Older boards, rental and strata properties, and premises that have had electrical additions over the years benefit from more regular professional inspection.

Smoke Alarm Installation

What type of smoke alarms does Queensland legislation require?

Queensland legislation requires photoelectric smoke alarms, which detect smouldering fires earlier and more reliably than older ionisation models. The alarms must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014, and they must be interconnected so that when one alarm activates, all alarms in the home sound together. Speedy Electrical installs photoelectric, interconnected systems that meet these requirements, and we will assess your specific home to recommend the right setup.

Where do smoke alarms need to be installed in my home?

Under Queensland requirements, smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey of the dwelling. The aim is to ensure that anyone sleeping anywhere in the home is alerted in time to escape. Our electricians assess your floor plan and install alarms in all the correct locations so your property meets the legislation.

Do the alarms need to be hardwired?

Alarms must be either hardwired to mains power with a backup battery, installed by a licensed electrician, or powered by a sealed, non-removable ten-year lithium battery. Importantly, if you are replacing an existing hardwired alarm, the replacement must also be hardwired. Our licensed electricians install and connect hardwired, interconnected systems and will advise on the best approach for your home.

Thermal Imaging

What is electrical thermal imaging?

Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to capture the heat that electrical components give off. Healthy components run at expected temperatures, while faults such as loose connections, overloaded circuits or failing parts generate abnormal heat long before they cause a visible problem. By scanning switchboards, cabling and equipment, our electricians can pinpoint these hidden hotspots and recommend action — turning an unpredictable failure into a planned, manageable repair.

Why would my property benefit from a thermal scan?

Thermal imaging is valuable anywhere an unexpected electrical failure would be costly or dangerous. For businesses, that means avoiding downtime, equipment damage and fire risk. For homes, it can reveal hidden switchboard faults before they escalate. Because the scan is non-invasive and carried out while everything is running, it gives you a clear picture of your system's health without any disruption — making it a smart preventative measure.

Does thermal imaging require shutting down power?

No. One of the main advantages of thermal imaging is that it is carried out while your electrical system and equipment are running normally and under load. In fact, the components need to be operating for heat-related faults to show up. This means we can survey your switchboards and equipment without interrupting your home or business operations at all.

Test & Tag

What is test and tag and why does my workplace need it?

Test and tag is the process of inspecting and testing portable electrical equipment to confirm it is safe to use, then attaching a tag showing the result and the next test date. Workplaces have a duty of care to provide safe equipment, and electrical tools and appliances degrade with use. Regular test and tag identifies damaged or faulty items before they cause a shock or fire, and gives you clear evidence that you are managing electrical safety responsibly.

What does the test and tag process involve?

Our technician carries out a visual inspection of each item — checking the cord, plug, casing and any visible components for wear, heat damage or defects — then uses portable testing equipment to electrically test the device. Each item that passes is tagged with the test result, the date and when it is next due. Items that fail are identified so they can be removed from service or repaired. We record all results for your safety documentation.

How often does equipment need to be tested and tagged?

Testing frequency depends on the environment the equipment is used in. Items used in harsh conditions — exposed to dust, moisture, heat or vibration, or moved around frequently — need testing more often than equipment used gently in a clean office. We assess your workplace and equipment and recommend appropriate intervals so you stay compliant without over-testing. We can also help you keep track of when each item is next due.

Hot Water Repairs

What hot water problems can you repair?

Our licensed electricians repair the electrical faults that commonly affect electric hot water systems — including no hot water at all, water that is not hot enough, fluctuating temperatures, and tripping circuits associated with the system. We diagnose the underlying cause, whether it is a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat, or a wiring or connection problem, and carry out a safe, lasting repair. If you have an electric hot water issue, we can help.

Can you repair my hot water system on the first visit?

In most cases, yes. Our electricians arrive equipped with the tools and common components needed to complete the majority of electric hot water repairs in a single visit. Occasionally a system is beyond economical repair or needs a part that has to be ordered, in which case we explain your options clearly. Our priority is restoring your hot water quickly and reliably with minimal disruption to your day.

Why is my hot water not getting hot enough?

Lukewarm or insufficient hot water from an electric system is often caused by a failing heating element or a faulty thermostat. An element that is partially failed may still heat the water, but not fully, while a thermostat fault can stop the system reaching the right temperature. Sediment build-up and wiring issues can also play a part. Our electrician will test the components and identify the actual cause rather than guessing.

Stove Repairs

What stove and cooktop faults can you repair?

Our electricians repair the common electrical faults affecting electric stoves and cooktops — including elements that will not heat, hotplates stuck on or off, faulty switches and controls, inaccurate or unresponsive temperature settings, and tripping associated with the appliance. We diagnose the underlying cause, then repair or replace the faulty components with compatible, quality parts so your stove works reliably again.

Do you repair commercial kitchen cooktops?

Yes. We repair electric cooktops and stoves in commercial kitchens — cafés, restaurants and catering operations — as well as domestic appliances. We understand that a cooktop out of action directly affects your ability to trade, so we respond promptly and work efficiently to minimise downtime. Getting your kitchen back to full capacity quickly is our priority on every commercial repair.

Is it worth repairing my stove or should I replace it?

In many cases, repair is the more economical choice. A burnt-out element or a faulty switch is often straightforward to fix, restoring a perfectly good appliance at a fraction of the cost of replacement. However, if a stove is very old or has multiple failing components, replacement may make more sense. After diagnosing the fault, our electrician will give you honest advice so you can make the best decision.

Service & Repairs

What electrical repairs and services do you provide?

We provide general electrical repairs, installations and maintenance for homes and businesses across Brisbane. That includes fault finding and repairs, installing lighting, power points, ceiling fans and dimmers, switchboard upgrades, safety switch testing, and scheduled maintenance. Whether it is a single repair, a fit-out or ongoing maintenance, our licensed electricians handle the work professionally and can advise on the best approach for your property.

Can you find the cause of a recurring electrical fault?

Yes. Intermittent and recurring faults — circuits that trip occasionally, lights that flicker, or power points that sometimes do not work — can be frustrating because the problem is not always present. Our electricians use systematic testing to trace these faults to their actual source rather than guessing. Once we have identified the cause, we carry out a lasting repair so the problem does not keep returning.

Do you handle both residential and commercial electrical work?

Yes. Our licensed electricians work across residential and commercial settings — family homes, offices, shops, and other commercial premises. The principles are the same: accurate diagnosis, safe and compliant work, and reliable results. For businesses we also understand the importance of minimising disruption, so we schedule work sensibly and keep you operating wherever possible.

Real Estate & Strata

Do you work with property managers and strata companies?

Yes. Working with real estate agencies, property managers and strata companies is a core part of what we do. We understand that you need an electrical partner who is responsive, reliable and easy to deal with — one who turns up on time, communicates clearly, and resolves issues without fuss. We support managed portfolios of all sizes, from individual rental units to large residential complexes across Brisbane.

Can you coordinate access with tenants and our office?

Yes. We are set up to handle the practical side of working on managed properties. We can arrange secure key pickup and drop-off with your office or agency, and coordinate access with tenants directly where that is more convenient. Our aim is to make each job as low-effort as possible for you, so a maintenance request or repair is handled smoothly from start to finish.

How do you handle electrical emergencies in rental properties?

We run a 24/7 emergency electrical service, which is essential for managed properties where a fault can affect tenant safety at any hour. When an emergency arises — a power outage, a hazard, exposed wiring — we respond promptly to make the situation safe and restore power. We keep you informed throughout, so as the manager you always know what is happening with your property.

Electrical Services for New Homes

Do you provide electrical services for new home builds?

Yes. We provide complete, start-to-finish electrical services for new homes across Brisbane, working with both homeowners and builders. That covers planning the electrical layout, installing lighting, power points and switches, fitting the switchboard with modern circuit breakers and safety switches, and ensuring the whole system is installed to current standards. We help create an electrical setup that suits how you will actually live in your new home.

When should I involve an electrician in my new build?

As early as practical. Involving an electrician during the planning stage means the electrical layout can be designed properly around how you intend to use each room — where you want lighting, power points, switches and feature lighting. Decisions made early are far cheaper and easier than changes made later. Getting the design right from the start gives you a home that is functional, efficient and comfortable to live in.

Can you design the electrical layout for my new home?

Yes. We work with you to design an electrical layout tailored to your floor plan, lifestyle and future needs. That means thinking through lighting placement, the number and location of power points and USB outlets, switch positions, sensor and feature lighting, and provision for future additions. A well-designed layout makes a real difference to how comfortable and practical your finished home feels day to day.
