Funeral Planning FAQ

What should I do when someone dies?
Contact Nelson Bros Funeral Services immediately on (03) 8398 4333. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our team will guide you through the immediate steps — including transfer of your loved one into our care — and arrange a time to meet and discuss funeral arrangements at your convenience.
How much does a funeral cost?
Funeral costs vary depending on the type of service, burial or cremation, and the options chosen. Nelson Bros provides transparent, itemised pricing and can accommodate a wide range of budgets. We also assist families to access government funeral payments and help prepare claims for funeral bonds or insurance. Contact us for a full price guide.
Can I pre-plan my own funeral?
Yes. Pre-planning your funeral is a thoughtful gift to your family, sparing them from having to make difficult decisions while grieving. Nelson Bros offers a full pre-arrangement service — you can plan and fully fund your funeral in advance, with complete peace of mind that your wishes will be carried out exactly as specified.
What is the difference between burial and cremation?
Burial involves interment of the body in a cemetery, either in a lawn, monumental, or garden setting. Cremation is the process of reducing the body to ashes, which can then be kept, scattered, or interred. Both options can be preceded by a full funeral service. Nelson Bros can help you understand the costs, religious considerations, and practical differences.
Can family members be involved in the funeral service?
Absolutely. We encourage family involvement at every stage — from writing the eulogy and choosing music, to acting as pallbearers or assisting with the service. The funeral should reflect your loved one's life and the wishes of the family.
Do you offer webcasting for services?
Yes. Nelson Bros provides professional live webcasting and video recording of funeral services, so that family and friends who are unable to attend in person can still be present and pay their respects.
What are green or natural funerals?
A green or natural funeral minimises the environmental impact of the burial or cremation process. Options include biodegradable caskets, natural burial grounds where no concrete vaults are used, and environmentally responsible cremation.
Do you cater for all religions and cultures?
Yes. Nelson Bros has served Melbourne's diverse multicultural communities for generations. We have extensive experience with funerals across all religious faiths and cultural traditions, and work respectfully with families, religious leaders, and cultural community representatives.
What grief support do you offer after the funeral?
Nelson Bros operates a Bereavement Resource Centre that has been providing grief support since 1987. Services include individual counselling, support groups, and a library of resources. Our support does not end at the graveside.
Where are your funeral homes located?
Nelson Bros has six locations across Melbourne: Elsternwick (315 Kooyong Rd), Footscray (7 Droop St), Hoppers Crossing (237 Heaths Rd, Werribee), Port Melbourne (214 Lorimer St), Sunshine (51 Devonshire Rd), and Williamstown (81 Kororoit Creek Rd).
