Common Questions
Electrician FAQ
Gold Coast
Answers to common questions about electrical work, licensing, safety, and working with Overdrive Electrical.
Licensing & Safety
Do I need a licensed electrician for small jobs?
Yes. In Queensland, any work that involves fixed wiring — including installing a power point, light fitting, ceiling fan, or appliance — must be done by a licensed electrician. DIY electrical work is illegal under the Electrical Safety Act 2002.
What is an Electrical Safety Certificate?
An Electrical Safety Certificate (Form 4 in Queensland) is issued by a licensed electrical contractor after completing electrical work such as a switchboard upgrade or new circuit installation. It confirms the work complies with the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000).
Is it safe to reset a circuit breaker that keeps tripping?
Resetting once after overload is generally safe. If it trips again without an obvious cause, do not keep resetting — call an electrician to inspect. Repeated resetting of a faulty circuit is a fire risk.
What should I do if my safety switch keeps tripping?
Try unplugging appliances one by one on the affected circuit to isolate the faulty item. If the switch keeps tripping after that, call an electrician — there may be a wiring fault on the circuit.

Services
Can you install a ceiling fan on a raked ceiling?
Yes. We use appropriate downrod and angle-bracket kits for raked and cathedral ceilings. Let us know your ceiling type when booking and we'll bring the correct hardware.
What's involved in a switchboard upgrade?
We replace your existing board (or ceramic fuse board) with a modern unit fitted with circuit breakers and safety switches. Your power will be off for several hours. Owen quotes upfront and includes an Electrical Safety Certificate with every switchboard job.
Do you do EV charger installation?
Yes. EV charger installation requires a dedicated circuit from your switchboard. Owen assesses your board's capacity and installs the circuit and charger to manufacturer and AS/NZS specifications.
Can you help with electrical work on a renovation?
Yes. Overdrive Electrical handles all electrical aspects of kitchen, bathroom and full-home renovations — new circuits, lighting layout, appliance connections, and switchboard upgrades to handle increased loads.
