General

General questions

Which suburbs does Gordon Electrical service?+
We are a local Bayside Brisbane electrical business based around Ormiston, and we work across Cleveland, the Redlands and the wider Bayside area for both homes and businesses. Being local means we know the area and can usually get to you quickly. If you are nearby and not certain whether you are in our service area, just call us and we will let you know.
What are your hours, and do you handle urgent work?+
We carry out scheduled electrical work through the working week and make a point of responding promptly to urgent jobs, because electrical faults are not something that should wait. If you have an urgent problem, call Joel on 0435 042 070 and we will let you know how soon we can help and what to do in the meantime.
Are your electricians licensed?+
Yes. Gordon Electrical is a licensed electrical business — our electrical licence number is 88778 — and all work is carried out by skilled, licensed electricians. In Queensland, electrical work must legally be performed by a licensed electrician, both for safety and so the work is compliant. We are always happy to confirm our licence details when you ask.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We will confirm the payment options available to you when we provide your quote, so everything is clear before the work goes ahead. If you have a preferred way to pay, let us know when you get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate it. Our aim is to keep the whole process straightforward from quote to completion.
How do I get a quote?+
Getting a quote is easy and free. Send an enquiry through our contact form or call Joel on 0435 042 070, tell us a little about the work and your suburb, and we will arrange a suitable time to assess the job. You will receive a clear, upfront quote with no obligation, so you can decide in your own time.
Do you stand behind your work?+
Yes. We take pride in doing electrical work properly and to standard the first time, and we want you to be genuinely happy with the result. All work is carried out by licensed electricians, and your rights as a customer are also protected under Australian Consumer Law. If you ever have a concern about work we have done, talk to us and we will make it right.
Residential Electrical

Residential Electrical questions

Do you cover my suburb for home electrical work?+
Yes. Gordon Electrical works with homeowners right across Ormiston, Cleveland, the Redlands and the wider Bayside Brisbane area. We are a genuinely local team, so we know the area well and can usually get to you quickly. If you are nearby and not sure whether you are in our patch, just give Joel a call and we will let you know straight away.
How do you charge for residential electrical jobs?+
Every home is different, so we quote based on the work in front of us rather than a flat rate. For most jobs we will talk through what you need, assess the work and give you a clear, upfront quote before anything starts — so there are no surprises. Quotes are free and obligation-free. For smaller repairs we will explain how the job will be charged before we begin.
Can you help with an urgent electrical problem at home?+
Yes. Electrical faults like tripping power, dead circuits or burning smells should not wait, and we make a point of responding promptly to urgent residential work. If something does not feel safe, switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard if you can do so safely, keep clear of it, and call us. We will let you know how soon we can be there and what to do in the meantime.
Are your electricians licensed?+
Yes. Gordon Electrical is a licensed electrical business — our electrical licence number is 88778 — and all residential work is carried out by skilled, licensed electricians. Electrical work in Queensland must legally be done by a licensed electrician, both for your safety and so the work is compliant. We are happy to confirm our licence details any time you ask.
What kind of residential electrical work do you do?+
We handle the full range of home electrical work — repairs and fault-finding, new power points and switches, lighting installations, ceiling fans, switchboard upgrades, smoke alarms, and complete home rewiring during renovations. Whether it is a single small fix or a larger project, the same licensed team looks after it. If you are not sure whether something is in our scope, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
Do I need to be home while the work is done?+
For most jobs it helps to have someone home at the start so we can confirm exactly what you want and walk through the space, but you do not always need to stay for the whole visit. We will agree access arrangements with you when we book the job. For anything that involves turning the power off, we will let you know in advance so you can plan around it.
How do I book a residential electrician?+
The easiest way is to send an enquiry through our contact form or call Joel directly on 0435 042 070. Tell us a little about the work and your suburb, and we will arrange a time that suits you and provide a quote. We will confirm the appointment with you and keep you updated, so you always know when to expect us.
Commercial Electrical

Commercial Electrical questions

Do you work with businesses in Bayside Brisbane?+
Yes. Gordon Electrical works with businesses across Ormiston, Cleveland, the Redlands and the wider Bayside Brisbane area, from small shopfronts to larger commercial premises. We understand that downtime costs money, so we focus on reliable, well-organised work that keeps your operation running. If you are unsure whether we cover your location, give us a call and we will confirm.
Can you carry out work outside of business hours?+
Where it makes sense, yes. A lot of commercial electrical work — especially anything that means switching power off — is best done outside trading hours so your business is not disrupted. When we quote your job we will talk through timing and agree a schedule that minimises the impact on your customers and staff. Just let us know your trading hours when you get in touch.
How is commercial electrical work quoted?+
We quote commercial work based on the scope, access and timing of the project rather than a fixed price list. After discussing your needs — and visiting the site where needed — we provide a clear written quote so you know what is included before work begins. For ongoing or maintenance-type work, we will explain how that is charged up front. Quotes are free and obligation-free.
Do you handle both small jobs and full fitouts?+
We do. The same licensed team looks after quick commercial repairs and additional power points right through to full shop and commercial property fitouts. That means you have one trusted electrical contact for your premises rather than juggling several. Whatever the size of the job, we approach it with the same attention to detail and focus on safety and compliance.
Is your commercial work compliant with safety standards?+
Yes. All of our commercial electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians and completed to meet the relevant Australian standards and safety regulations. Compliance is not optional in a commercial setting — it protects your staff, your customers and your business — so it is built into how we plan and finish every job. We are happy to discuss compliance requirements specific to your premises.
Can you look after our electrical systems on an ongoing basis?+
Yes. Many businesses prefer to have a regular electrician who already knows their site, and we are happy to be that contact for you. We can carry out scheduled maintenance, inspections and repairs to keep your electrical systems safe, efficient and reliable. Get in touch and we can talk through a maintenance arrangement that suits how your business operates.
Energy Efficient Lighting

Energy Efficient Lighting questions

What lighting services does Gordon Electrical offer?+
We design and install lighting for both homes and businesses — interior and exterior lighting, downlights, feature and accent lighting, outdoor and security lighting, smart lighting and emergency systems. We work with quality products from reputable brands and focus on lighting that looks good, suits how you use the space and is energy efficient. If you have a particular look or outcome in mind, tell us and we will help bring it together.
Can you help me switch to energy-efficient LED lighting?+
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular jobs we do. Upgrading older lighting to modern LED can reduce energy use, lower running costs and give you better quality light. We can assess your existing lighting, recommend suitable LED options and handle the full installation. We will explain the choices clearly so you can decide what is right for your home or business.
Do you do both indoor and outdoor lighting?+
Yes. We install lighting throughout the home or premises — kitchens, living areas, stairwells, bathrooms — as well as outdoor lighting for entertaining areas, gardens, pathways and security. Outdoor lighting needs to be installed correctly to handle the weather and stay safe, which is exactly why it should be done by a licensed electrician. We are happy to advise on the best approach for your space.
Can you install smart lighting?+
Yes. We install smart lighting systems that let you control your lights by app, voice or schedule, including dimmable and zoned setups. Smart lighting can add real convenience and help manage energy use. We will talk through the options, recommend a system that fits how you live or work, and make sure it is installed and set up properly so it is easy to use day to day.
How much does a lighting upgrade cost?+
It depends on how many fittings are involved, the products you choose and the work needed to install them, so we quote each job individually rather than using a set price. After we understand what you want, we provide a clear, upfront quote with no obligation. For larger lighting projects we can also stage the work if that suits your budget and timing.
Do you design lighting layouts, or just install fittings?+
Both. If you already know what you want, we will install it. If you are starting from a blank slate — a renovation, a new build or a tired space — we can help plan a lighting layout that balances ambient, task and feature lighting for the way you use each room. Good lighting design makes a noticeable difference, and it is worth getting right from the start.
General Electrical

General Electrical questions

What does general electrical work cover?+
General electrical work covers everything that keeps your home or business running safely — fault-finding and repairs, new power points and switches, wiring upgrades, switchboard work, lighting, ceiling fans, appliance connections and routine maintenance. If something electrical is not working as it should, or you are planning an upgrade, it usually falls under general electrical. Tell us what is going on and we will let you know how we can help.
My power keeps tripping — can you help?+
Yes. Power that keeps tripping is your safety system doing its job, but it usually means there is an underlying fault worth investigating — an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or a wiring issue. We will track down the cause rather than just resetting it, and explain what needs to happen to fix it properly. If it is happening repeatedly, it is best not to ignore it — give us a call.
Can you upgrade my switchboard?+
Yes. Older switchboards often lack modern safety devices like circuit breakers and safety switches, and may struggle with the demands of a modern home or business. We can assess your existing switchboard and upgrade it so it is safer, compliant and able to handle your current electrical load. If you are adding major appliances, air conditioning or an EV charger, a switchboard check is a smart first step.
Do you install EV and car chargers?+
Yes. We install electric vehicle chargers for homes and businesses, including dedicated wall chargers. EV chargers draw significant power and must be installed by a licensed electrician on a suitable circuit, often alongside a switchboard check. We will assess your setup, recommend the right approach and install your charger safely so it is ready to use. Let us know your vehicle and where you would like the charger located.
How often should electrical maintenance be done?+
It depends on the age of the property and how it is used, but periodic checks of your switchboard, safety switches, smoke alarms and visible wiring are a sensible habit for any home or business. Regular maintenance helps catch small issues before they become expensive or unsafe. We can carry out an inspection and let you know if anything needs attention — there is no obligation to do more than that.
Do you offer electrical safety inspections?+
Yes. We can carry out an electrical safety inspection of your property and report back on the condition of your wiring, switchboard, safety switches and other key components. This is especially worthwhile for older homes, properties you are buying or selling, or business premises. We will give you a clear picture of anything that needs attention so you can make informed decisions.
How do you charge for general electrical work?+
We quote each job based on the work involved rather than a flat fee, and we will explain how the job will be charged before we start so you are never left guessing. For larger or more complex work we provide a written quote up front. Quotes are free and obligation-free — just get in touch and tell us what you need.
Smoke Alarms

Smoke Alarms questions

Are smoke alarms a legal requirement in Queensland?+
Yes. Queensland has specific smoke alarm legislation that sets out the type, placement and interconnection of alarms required in homes, with stricter rules for rental properties and properties being sold. Getting this right matters for your family's safety and your legal obligations. We can install compliant smoke alarms and advise you on what the current requirements mean for your particular property.
What kind of smoke alarms do you install?+
We install modern photoelectric smoke alarms and can set them up to be interconnected, so that when one alarm detects smoke, they all sound — giving everyone in the home the earliest possible warning. We work with quality, up-to-date products and place them where they will be most effective. We will recommend the right setup for the layout of your home or premises.
Do you do smoke alarm compliance checks for rental properties?+
Yes. Rental properties have particular smoke alarm obligations, and we can install and check alarms so your property meets the current requirements. If you are a landlord or property manager, we can assess the existing alarms, advise on what is needed and carry out the work. Get in touch and let us know the property details so we can help you stay compliant.
How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?+
As a general guide, smoke alarms should be tested regularly to make sure they are working, and the alarms themselves have a limited service life and need replacing once they reach the end of it. An alarm that is past its life may not perform when it matters most. If you are unsure how old your alarms are, we can check them and let you know whether they are due for replacement.
Can you upgrade my old smoke alarms?+
Yes. If your home still has older or stand-alone alarms, we can upgrade them to a modern, interconnected photoelectric system that meets current standards. This is a straightforward job for a licensed electrician and a worthwhile safety improvement for any home. We will assess what you currently have, explain the options and handle the full installation.
How much does smoke alarm installation cost?+
The cost depends on how many alarms your property needs, whether they are being interconnected and the work involved in installing them, so we quote each property individually. After we understand your home's layout and requirements, we provide a clear, upfront quote with no obligation. Given that smoke alarms protect lives, it is one upgrade that is well worth getting done properly.
Shop Fitouts

Shop Fitouts questions

What is involved in a shop electrical fitout?+
A shop fitout covers all the electrical work that turns an empty or tired retail space into a working store — power distribution, lighting installations, data cabling, power points and the wiring that supports your equipment and displays. We work closely with you to deliver a setup that is practical, safe and helps your space look its best. Tell us about your store and we will explain how we would approach it.
Can you work to a fitout deadline or opening date?+
Yes. We know a retail fitout is usually working towards a firm opening or handover date, and we plan the electrical work around that. When we quote your project we will talk through timing and coordinate our work so it fits with the rest of the fitout. Give us as much notice as you can and we will do our best to keep things on track.
Do you handle data cabling and power as well as lighting?+
Yes. A retail fitout is more than just lighting — we also take care of power distribution, power points and data cabling so your registers, displays and equipment all have what they need. Having one licensed electrical team handle the lot keeps the job coordinated and avoids gaps. We will map out exactly what your space needs as part of the quote.
Can you fit out a space I am renovating, not just new builds?+
Absolutely. Whether you are launching a brand new store, renovating an existing space or upgrading your electrical systems, we can help. Renovation fitouts often involve working with existing wiring, so we will assess what is already there and recommend the best way forward. Either way, the goal is the same — a safe, functional, well-presented space.
How is a shop fitout quoted?+
We quote fitouts based on the scope of the work, the size of the space, access and the timeline involved, so each project is priced individually. After discussing your plans — and visiting the site where it helps — we provide a clear written quote so you know what is included. Quotes are free and obligation-free.
Do you work after hours to avoid disrupting trade?+
Where the work allows, yes. If you are fitting out around an existing business or in a centre with set trading hours, we can schedule disruptive work outside of those times. Let us know your trading hours and any site access rules when you get in touch, and we will factor that into the plan and the quote.
Commercial Property

Commercial Property questions

What commercial property electrical work do you do?+
We deliver complete electrical solutions for commercial spaces — electrical system design and installation, data cabling, lighting, power distribution and ongoing maintenance. Whether you are establishing a new workspace, renovating an existing one or upgrading your systems, we cover every aspect of the electrical side. Tell us about your property and how it is used, and we will explain how we can help.
Can you design an electrical system for a new workspace?+
Yes. For a new or reconfigured workspace, we can plan and install an electrical system built around how your business actually operates — where the power, data and lighting need to be, and how to keep it efficient and safe. Getting the design right from the start avoids costly changes later. We are happy to work alongside your builder or designer to make it all come together.
Do you make sure the work meets safety regulations?+
Yes. All of our commercial property work is carried out by licensed electricians and completed to meet the relevant Australian standards and safety regulations. In a commercial setting, compliance protects your staff, your customers and your business, so it is built into how we plan and finish every job. We can talk through the compliance requirements that apply to your premises.
Can you help reduce our energy costs?+
We can. Energy-efficient lighting and well-planned electrical systems can noticeably reduce running costs over time. As part of a fitout or upgrade, we can recommend efficient LED lighting and sensible design choices that lower your energy use without compromising how the space works. We will explain the options clearly so you can weigh up what is worthwhile for your business.
How do you quote a commercial property project?+
We quote commercial property work based on the scope, access and timing of the project rather than a fixed price list. After discussing your requirements and reviewing the site where needed, we provide a clear written quote so you know what is included before work begins. Quotes are free and obligation-free.
Do you handle ongoing maintenance after the fitout?+
Yes. Once your commercial property is up and running, we are happy to stay on as your regular electrician for maintenance, inspections and any future work. Having an electrician who already knows your site makes ongoing care simpler and faster. Get in touch and we can set up a maintenance arrangement that suits your property and budget.
