Electrical Fault Finding in Brisbane

Tripping circuits, dead power points, flickering lights or burning smells? Comma Electrical diagnoses and fixes the hidden electrical fault — fast.

Electrical fault finding done methodically

Electrical faults rarely announce themselves clearly. Most of the time they show up as a breaker that keeps tripping, a power point that has gone dead, lights that flicker for no apparent reason, or a faint burning smell that you cannot quite place. Behind any of those symptoms is a fault somewhere on the circuit — and the only safe way to handle it is to find and fix the cause, not just keep resetting the breaker.

Comma Electrical uses a methodical, test-instrument-driven approach to fault finding. We isolate the affected circuit, check the wiring, terminations and fittings, and use insulation testers, multimeters and thermal imaging where they will help. The fault is identified, the affected section is repaired or replaced, and the circuit is tested before we leave.

You get a clear explanation of what was wrong, what we did about it, and any compliance work needed alongside the repair. Most faults are diagnosed and fixed in the first visit.

Common Questions

Electrical Fault Finding FAQs

Answers to the questions Brisbane customers ask most about this service.

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job — it is telling you something on that circuit is wrong. The cause is usually one of three things: an overloaded circuit drawing more current than the breaker is rated for, a short circuit between active and neutral, or an earth fault where current is leaking somewhere it should not. The right fix depends on the cause, so the first step is a proper diagnosis. We test the circuit, isolate the fault and either repair the wiring or change the affected fitting so the breaker holds without nuisance trips.

Half of my power is out — what should I do?

If only part of your home has lost power, you most likely have a tripped circuit rather than a full outage. Check your switchboard for a breaker or safety switch in the off or middle position and try resetting it. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and call us — repeated tripping means there is a live fault on that circuit. Do not keep resetting it. We will come out, find what is causing the trip and get the rest of the house back on safely.

Why are my lights flickering?

Flickering lights have a range of causes — a loose connection in a fitting, a worn switch, a failing driver in an LED, or a wider issue on the supply side. Occasional flicker on one light is usually a fitting issue; flickering across multiple lights or rooms is more serious and worth investigating quickly. We work through it methodically, starting with the affected fittings and switches, then moving to the circuit and supply if needed.

There is a burning smell from a power point — is it dangerous?

Yes. A burning smell from a power point, switch or anywhere on a circuit is a sign that wiring is overheating, and it is one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Stop using anything plugged into that outlet, switch off the relevant breaker at the switchboard if you can do so safely, and call us straight away. We will identify the fault — a loose terminal, a failing outlet, damaged cable or undersized wiring — and replace whatever has been affected.

How do you find an electrical fault?

Electrical fault finding is a process of elimination. We start with the symptoms — which circuit, which devices, when it happens — and use insulation testers, multimeters and thermal imaging where appropriate to narrow the fault down. We isolate sections of the circuit one by one until the faulty section is identified, then inspect the wiring, terminations and any fittings on that section. Most faults are diagnosed and repaired in the first visit.

Is there a call-out fee for fault finding?

Standard call-out for fault finding within our service area in normal hours is included in the quoted price for the work — you only pay for the job. After-hours and emergency call-outs are quoted upfront so you know the price before we start. We will give you a clear breakdown when you call, including what is covered and what is not.
