Energy saving tips for your home

There are many simple steps you can take to reduce your energy bill. We have summarised a few of our favourites below.

Hot water & the bathroom

  • Take shorter showers to save water and power.
  • Install a AAA showerhead and save up to two thirds of hot water.
  • Set the hot water temperature between 60 and 65 degrees.
  • For children, set the temperature between 50 and 55 degrees to prevent burns.
  • Fix all leaking taps.
  • A solar panel could save up to 90% of your hot water bill on a sunny day.
  • Insulate external hot water pipes to prevent heat loss.
  • Use cold water whenever possible.

In the kitchen

  • Microwaves cook food faster than a standard oven using less electricity.
  • When cooking in a pot, cook with the lid on.
  • Make sure food is completely thawed before cooking.
  • When boiling water, only use the amount required.
  • Use an electric kettle rather than boiling water on the stove.
  • Only preheat the oven when required.
  • A pressure cooker can use half the energy of a standard oven.
  • Avoid opening the oven door while cooking — it drops the temperature each time.

Using your dishwasher

  • Fill up the dishwasher before using it.
  • Turn the dishwasher off before the drying cycle and open the door to air-dry.
  • Always try to use the economy cycle.
  • Rinse dishes with cold water before loading.

In the laundry

  • Don't overload the machine — it uses more electricity.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.
  • Hang clothes outdoors to dry.
  • Make sure the lint filter is clean before using the clothes dryer.
  • Front loading washing machines are up to 15% more energy efficient than top loaders.

Keeping cool in summer

  • Set the air conditioner to around 23 degrees.
  • Keep blinds closed to keep the sun out, especially on north-facing windows.
  • Open the house to let in any cool breezes.
  • Ceiling fans are cheaper to run than air conditioners.
  • Roof insulation keeps heat out in summer and in during winter.
  • Keep all vents clean to save energy.

General energy saving

  • When buying electrical appliances, check the energy rating for efficiency.
  • Freezers cost more to run than fridges.
  • Switch appliances off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby.
  • Replace old globes with energy-efficient LED lighting.
