Timber Stairs & Balustrades

Solid timber staircases and balustrades, internal and external, cut and fitted to suit your home.

Solid timber external staircase and balustrade leading to a Queenslander verandah
/ What Adam does

Stairs get used every day, and they're the first thing a visitor puts a hand on — so they need to be solid, safe and worth looking at. Adam builds and fits timber staircases and balustrades for homes across Brisbane's inner-east, inside and out.

That covers new external stairs up to a Queenslander verandah, internal staircases as part of a renovation, and balustrade work on decks and landings. Treads, stringers, handrails and posts are cut to suit the house — including matching the look of an older character home where that matters.

If you only need part of a staircase put right — worn treads, a loose handrail, a balustrade that no longer feels safe — Adam can repair or replace just that, rather than the whole flight.

/ Questions

Timber stairs & balustrades — common questions.

Straight answers to what Brisbane homeowners usually ask before booking this work.
Do you build both internal and external timber stairs?
Yes. Adam builds and fits timber staircases inside and out — external stairs leading up to a Queenslander verandah or deck, and internal staircases as part of a renovation or extension. Treads, stringers, handrails and posts are all cut to suit the specific house rather than dropped in as an off-the-shelf kit. If you are not sure what your space can take, Adam will measure up and talk through the options before quoting.
Can you match new stairs to an older Queenslander?
This is one of the things Adam genuinely enjoys. Character Brisbane homes have a particular look — the profile of the posts, the spacing of the balusters, the timber detailing — and a new staircase only looks right if it respects that. Adam matches the detailing of the existing home so the stairs feel original rather than bolted on. When he measures up he will look at what is already there and explain how new work can be made to sit in with it.
What balustrade styles can you build?
Adam builds a range of balustrade styles — traditional timber balustrades with turned or square balusters, modern cable-wire balustrades for a lighter, more open look, and slatted timber screens. The right choice depends on the style of your home, the view you want to keep, and the safety requirements for the height involved. Adam will walk you through what suits your stairs or deck and what the options mean for the finished look.
How is a staircase job quoted?
After Adam has measured the site he gives you a written quote with a fixed price. The cost depends on the rise and run of the stairs, the timber chosen, the balustrade style, whether it is internal or external, and how much access there is to build it. Quoting only happens once Adam has seen the job in person — that way the price reflects your actual stairs, not a rough guess, and there are no surprises once the work begins.
Can you repair or replace just the treads or handrail?
Yes. You do not always need a whole new staircase. If the treads have worn, a handrail has come loose, or a balustrade no longer feels solid, Adam can repair or replace just that part rather than the entire flight. He will take a look, tell you honestly whether a repair is the sensible option or whether more of the structure needs attention, and quote accordingly. Safety is the first thing he checks on any older staircase.
How long does a staircase take to build and fit?
A set of stairs is usually a quick job compared with a full deck or renovation — often a matter of days once materials are ready. The exact time depends on the size of the staircase, the balustrade detail and the access to the work area. Adam will give you a clear time frame and a start date with your quote, and because he does the work himself there is no waiting on subcontractors to free up.
