Pergolas & Patios

Pergolas, patios and covered outdoor structures with exposed-timber detailing that make a backyard usable.

Exposed-timber pergola and patio roof framing built by Adam Pykett Carpentry
/ What Adam does

A pergola or patio is the cheapest square metre of living space you can add to a home — shade over the deck, cover for the outdoor table, somewhere the kids can be outside without being in the full sun. Adam builds covered outdoor structures across Bulimba and the surrounding suburbs.

These range from simple open pergolas to fully roofed patios with exposed-timber rafters and beams. Adam works out how the structure ties into your house or existing deck, what posts and footings it needs, and which roofing keeps it usable in both Brisbane heat and a summer downpour.

You'll get a fixed written quote, an honest read on whether your plans need council approval, and a structure framed properly so it lasts.

/ Questions

Pergolas & patios — common questions.

Straight answers to what Brisbane homeowners usually ask before booking this work.
What is the difference between a pergola and a patio you would build?
Both add covered outdoor space, and the line between them is mostly about the roof. A pergola is an open or partly open timber structure that gives shade and definition to an area, while a patio is generally fully roofed so it stays usable in rain as well as sun. Adam builds both, and when he visits he will talk through which one actually suits how you want to use the space and the way it ties into your home.
Do pergolas need council approval in Brisbane?
Some do and some do not — it depends on the size of the structure, how it attaches to the house and where it sits on the block. Rather than guess, Adam will give you an honest read on whether your plans are likely to need approval when he quotes the job, and point you in the right direction if a certifier or council application is involved. It is better to sort that out early than to discover it part way through.
What timber and roofing do you use on a pergola?
Adam builds pergolas and patios with solid timber posts, beams and rafters — the exposed-timber framing is part of what makes them look good. Roofing is chosen for how you want to use the space: an open or slatted top for filtered shade, or sheet roofing for full cover from sun and rain. He will talk through the timber and roofing options when he measures up so the finished structure does what you actually need.
How do you price a pergola or patio?
Each pergola or patio is quoted after Adam has seen the site. The price reflects the size of the structure, the timber and roofing you choose, the footings and posts it needs, and how it connects to your house or existing deck. You get a detailed written quote with a fixed price before work starts, so the cost is clear up front and there are no hourly surprises once the build is running.
Can a pergola attach to an existing house or deck?
Yes. Many of the pergolas and patios Adam builds attach to the house, sit over an existing deck, or do both. The important part is how the new structure ties in — the connection back to the house has to be done properly so it is solid and weather-tight, and the posts and footings have to suit what is already there. Adam works all of that out when he measures up and explains how it will go together.
How long does a pergola build take?
A pergola or patio is usually a shorter job than a full deck or renovation, often completed within a week or so depending on the size and roofing. Weather and access can move things along or slow them down. Adam gives you a realistic time frame and a start date with the quote, and keeps you informed if anything shifts, so you always know where the job stands.
