Strength Training for beginners

To the Beginners
The benefits of strength and aerobic training are widely understood, but how do you start strength training for beginners. Many non gym goers wish to start and maintain a habit of exercise. Turning that motivation into a plan and executing is the tricky bit. Even if you are successful getting going it takes discipline and resilience to maintain your plan long term.
So I wanted to write to the beginners. To those starting out on their fitness and health journey.
We all start somewhere
Thinking back to when I first enquired at a gym similar to West End Strength. I submitted an online enquiry form, received a call back from the gym to answer more questions and eventually showed up to a new and unfamiliar environment.
My comfort zone was running and doing pilates on the mat, that’s what I knew. Arriving for my first 6am trial session I was nervous. I knew I was an “outsider”. The concept of lifting weights felt foreign and slightly frightening. I didn’t know the language, acronyms or culture. I didn’t know anybody at the gym I was joining. But I knew I wanted to try this strength training thing, and soon enough I was lifting weights and doing movements I had never thought about before. Once I had faced my fears, gotten over the hump and got myself in motion I felt extremely positive.
All this to say that I still remember and appreciate what it is like to be at the beginning. You have the motivation. You may have been googling gyms near you. Maybe you got lost in the detail of what type of facility you should go to or what type of training you should start. The unfamiliarity of it all can be overwhelming. You may have tried some places that did not feel right. You may be worried about getting injured or have injured yourself in the past when starting out.

Well if this sounds familiar to you and you have read this far I think I can help you. Our goal with our group program is to help the everyday athlete safely reap the rewards of strength and conditioning training.
We love seeing members go from, “I don’t do box jumps” (because of fear or injury) to “I just did that” (with guidance and support). Or telling us how they are feeling stronger and able to do more with their family or have more energy to go about their day.
We are regularly welcoming clients into the gym who have either never done group training before, or simply never done any kind of strength or aerobic exercise before. We love sharing what this training has to offer.
West End seems to be becoming quite the fitness hub. It’s great, there is so much opportunity for people to train and be healthy. But how do you know which gym is for you?
My suggestion is to chat with the Coaches or the staff at the gyms and book in for more than one trial session. If you can get in multiple times you will get a more genuine feel for the coaching style, the community, and the environment.
If anything I have said resonates with you we’d love the opportunity for you to experience the West End Strength community. For all new group training enquiries at West End Strength we offer a one on one movement consultation with one of our coaches. In this session we work through any injuries or limitations you may have and practice the foundational movements.
