Questions, answered.
Everything Brisbane clients tend to ask before booking carpentry, renovation or fit-out work with OB Carpentry.
Domestic renovations & extensions
Do you take on full home renovations, or just small jobs?
Both. OB Carpentry handles complete renovations of the interior and exterior of traditional timber and tin homes, right through to single repairs and feature work. Oliver works to your design or to an architect's plans, and is happy to advise on the design as the project develops. Because only one project is undertaken at a time, a larger renovation receives the same focused attention as a small repair — the scope of the job is less important than getting the result finished to a high standard.
What kinds of repairs do you carry out on older Queensland homes?
OB Carpentry repairs storm, rot, sun, age and white-ant damage to traditional timber and tin homes — the issues that come with the territory in older Brisbane houses. That includes verandah replacement and restoration, building in under-house areas, stair repair and replacement, and structural carpentry. Oliver will inspect the affected area, explain what is involved, and recommend a practical approach before any work begins.
Can you build decks, pergolas and outdoor areas?
Yes. New decks, pergolas and garden features are a core part of the domestic work, including architect-designed structures built in hardwoods such as ironbark. Past projects include an architect-designed pergola in ironbark and fibro for a Windsor home. Oliver can build to your own ideas or to a designer's plans, and will talk through timber choices and detailing with you first.
Do you handle kitchen and bathroom renovations?
Yes. Kitchen and bathroom make-overs and renovations are part of the domestic service, including custom joinery — past kitchens have been built from plywood with hardwood and stainless-steel benchtops, and windows enlarged to bring in extra light while keeping the home's original character. The carpentry, structural work and fit-out are managed directly so the finished room is cohesive.
How is pricing worked out for a renovation or repair?
Pricing starts with a conversation and a site visit. Oliver comes to the property, measures up, listens to what you are planning and offers advice on design and materials before preparing a quote. Costs depend on the scope, the materials and the condition of the existing structure, so there is no single rate — the quote is prepared specifically for your project after he has seen it. Quotes for Brisbane carpentry and building work are provided free of charge.
Will I be dealing with Oliver directly throughout the job?
Yes. OB Carpentry is a small craftsman carpentry service, and you deal with Oliver Bergel from the first conversation to the final clean-up. He values clear communication highly and treats it as just as important to a good result as the technical work. One client had an entire renovation organised and executed while they were overseas, with no on-site supervision — handled, in their words, in an excellent manner.
Commercial fit-outs
What types of commercial fit-outs do you take on?
OB Carpentry has extensive experience fitting out shops, offices, bakeries and small factories. Oliver provides a complete fit-out service or full project management of a business venture, and can custom-fabricate fixtures and fittings, or rejuvenate and adapt an existing fit-out so a business stands out. Past work includes a multi-level boutique retail fit-out in Paddington that combined two outlets into a retail space, cafe and commercial kitchen.
Can you project-manage a fit-out involving multiple trades?
Yes. Oliver has managed fit-outs that involve sourcing tenders for key elements, contracting fabrication and installation, and coordinating multiple trades. A past example is The Original Bagel Company's expansion, where OB Carpentry project-managed the fit-out of three retail outlets and relocated the bakery to a custom-built premises in Bowen Hills. Project management means one point of accountability for the whole job.
Do you repair structural problems in older commercial premises?
Yes. Older shopfronts and premises are often structurally damaged by previous fit-outs. OB Carpentry carries out the structural repair needed to make a building sound again before the new fit-out goes in — one Paddington retail building had been badly damaged by earlier work and required extensive repair before it could be brought back to its turn-of-the-century character.
Can you custom-make counters, fixtures and joinery?
Yes. Custom fabrication is part of the commercial service. Oliver has built cafe counters from recycled timbers to match the era of a building, which proved a more economical result for the client than engaging a separate cabinet maker. Fixtures and fittings can be custom-made or adapted from existing pieces, depending on what suits the space and the budget.
How disruptive is a fit-out to a trading business?
Oliver plans the work to keep disruption manageable and to deliver on time and on budget. Because OB Carpentry runs one project at a time, your fit-out has his direct attention rather than being one of many jobs being juggled. Timing, staging and access are discussed up front so the work fits around your business as much as possible.
How do I get a quote for a commercial project?
Start with a phone call to talk through what the business needs. Oliver will arrange to see the premises, discuss the scope and the trades involved, and prepare a quote based on what the project requires. Pricing depends on the size of the fit-out, the materials and the amount of structural or repair work involved, so each quote is prepared specifically for the project.
Body corporate works
Do you carry out work for body corporate committees?
Yes. OB Carpentry undertakes carpentry and building works for apartment complexes and body corporate committees. Oliver was selected to rebuild the timber pool deck and ramp at Koko Apartments in West End after a comprehensive tendering process, and is comfortable working within the requirements and approval processes that body corporate projects involve.
What does your tender or quote include?
Quotes for body corporate work are detailed and competitive, and go beyond a price. For the Koko Apartments project the quote included helpful recommendations and innovative options for the committee to consider. Oliver is also pro-active about contacting engineers for clarification on details and arranging extra meetings with committee members to discuss concerns such as future maintenance and the use of alternative materials.
How do you keep disruption to residents to a minimum?
Body corporate jobs are planned around the people who live there. On the Koko Apartments deck rebuild, Oliver and his team were careful to minimise noise and mess within the internal pool deck area, and the build was scheduled through the winter months to reduce the inconvenience to residents using the pool. Work is carried out courteously, reliably and on time.
Will the committee need to supervise the work closely?
No. The Koko Apartments project was completed in a timely manner with little supervision or involvement needed from committee members. Oliver answers enquiries promptly and keeps the relevant people informed, so the committee can have confidence the job is progressing without having to manage it day to day.
Do you coordinate with engineers and certifiers?
Yes. Oliver works in with engineers and other parties as a project requires. On the Koko Apartments deck the engineer advised at final inspection that he was impressed with the outcome and quality of the work. Coordinating with the right people on details and inspections is treated as part of delivering the job properly.
How do we arrange a quote for our complex?
Call Oliver to discuss what the complex needs. He will arrange to inspect the site, talk through the scope with the committee or building manager, and prepare a detailed written quote. Pricing depends on the scale of the work, the materials and access, so each quote is prepared specifically after he has assessed the job on site.

Yes. Oliver Bergel holds a Builders licence and a Carpenters licence — QBSA Licence 78878, covering Builder (Low Rise) and Carpenter and Joiner. The licence details are listed on the contact page of the OB Carpentry website. How do I get a quote, and is it free?
Quotes are free. Call Oliver to discuss your project, and he will arrange a time to see it in person. He measures up, listens to what you are planning, and offers advice on design and materials before preparing the quote. Because every job is different, the quote is prepared specifically for your project rather than from a fixed price list.
Do you only take on one job at a time?
Yes — and it is a deliberate choice. With OB Carpentry you get a personalised service and a guarantee that only one project is undertaken at any time. That means your job has Oliver's full focus from start to finish, the site is properly managed, and communication stays clear throughout the build rather than being spread thin across several jobs.
How long has OB Carpentry been operating?
OB Carpentry has been providing carpentry and building services in Brisbane for more than 30 years, drawing on more than three decades of varied and diverse construction experience. That long track record across domestic, commercial and body corporate work is part of why clients are confident handing over a project of any size.
What sort of work does OB Carpentry specialise in?
OB Carpentry specialises in domestic renovations, extensions and repairs of traditional timber and tin homes, commercial fit-outs and maintenance for business premises, and carpentry works for body corporate committees. The common thread is traditional craftsmanship combined with prompt, courteous service — and a collaborative approach that treats clear communication as central to a good result.
