Switchboard upgrade FAQs

When do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Signs you may need a switchboard upgrade include: your home still has old ceramic fuses (not modern circuit breakers), the switchboard lacks safety switches (RCDs), breakers trip frequently, you're adding high-draw appliances (EV charger, new AC, solar), or your switchboard is more than 25–30 years old.
What is a safety switch (RCD) and why do I need one?
A Residual Current Device (RCD) — or safety switch — detects current leakage and cuts power in milliseconds to prevent electrocution. Queensland regulations require safety switches on power and lighting circuits in new homes and are strongly recommended in all homes. An upgraded switchboard includes modern RCDs as standard.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
A standard residential switchboard upgrade typically takes 2–4 hours. During this time the power to your home will be off. We aim to schedule upgrades to minimise disruption and will always give you advance notice of the downtime window.
Can you upgrade my switchboard to support solar or an EV charger?
Yes. Switchboard upgrades for solar inverter connections and EV charging circuits are a common request. Mahiya assesses the existing board capacity and upgrades the main switchboard, adds dedicated circuits, and installs any required RCDs or metering connections.
Is my old ceramic fuse box a safety hazard?
Old ceramic fuse boxes don't have automatic circuit protection and can fail to cut power quickly enough in a fault situation, increasing fire and electrocution risk. They also typically lack modern RCDs. Replacing an old fuse box with a modern switchboard is one of the most impactful electrical safety upgrades you can make.
Will a switchboard upgrade require council approval in Queensland?
Switchboard upgrades in Queensland require a Form 4 (Electrical Work Request) and a Certificate of Test — both prepared and lodged by the licensed electrician. No separate council building permit is required for a like-for-like switchboard replacement. Mahiya handles all compliance documentation.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Palm Beach?
Switchboard upgrade costs vary depending on the size of the existing board, number of circuits, and whether additional consumer mains work is needed. As a guide, a standard residential upgrade starts around $800–$1,500. Mahiya provides a detailed upfront quote before any work begins.
Do you offer emergency switchboard repairs?
Yes. If your switchboard is sparking, making noise, running hot, or if breakers won't stay reset, call 0434 499 013 immediately. Good Vibes Electrical is available 24/7 for urgent electrical issues.
