FAQs

Switchboards — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Signs include ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers, frequent tripping, no RCD (safety switch) protection, physical signs of heat damage or corrosion, or your switchboard cannot handle additional appliances. Homes built before the 1990s almost always benefit from a switchboard upgrade.

What is an RCD and why do I need one?

An RCD (Residual Current Device), also called a safety switch, monitors the flow of electricity and shuts off power in milliseconds if it detects a fault — such as someone receiving an electric shock. Queensland regulations require RCDs on all power and lighting circuits in new and substantially renovated homes.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A standard domestic switchboard upgrade takes four to eight hours depending on complexity. During this time, power to the property will be off. We schedule the work to minimise disruption and let you know exactly what to expect in advance.

Can I add more circuits to my existing switchboard?

If there are spare slots in your existing switchboard, yes. If the board is full or undersized, we will either install a sub-board or upgrade the main switchboard. We assess capacity during the quote.

Is a switchboard upgrade required when installing solar?

Often yes. Solar inverters require a dedicated circuit, and older switchboards may not have the capacity or compatible breakers for grid-connect solar systems. We work alongside solar installers and coordinate the switchboard upgrade as part of your solar project.

What happens during a power outage — should I touch the switchboard?

If a circuit breaker has tripped, you can reset it by switching it fully off then back on. If a fuse has blown, do not attempt to replace it yourself — call a licensed electrician. If the main switch will not reset, call us immediately.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

Cost depends on the size of the switchboard, the number of circuits, and any additional work. We provide a detailed fixed-price quote after assessing your existing installation. Contact us for a no-obligation quote.
