Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before booking a Brisbane electrician — from licensing and quotes to how each of our services works.

General questions

Which areas of Brisbane does BJL Electrical Solutions cover?

We serve homes and businesses right across Brisbane, including the inner-eastern suburbs around Hawthorne, Bulimba and Morningside, the inner-north around Paddington, Ashgrove and The Gap, and many suburbs in between. We're based in Keperra. If you'd like to confirm we cover your suburb, just give us a call.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. BJL Electrical Solutions holds a Queensland Electrical Contractors Licence (No. 86701). All electrical work in Queensland must legally be carried out by licensed electricians, and we work strictly to the relevant Australian Standards on every job.

How do I get a quote?

Getting a quote is easy — call us on 0417 844 478 or fill in the enquiry form on our contact page with a few details about the work you need. We'll get back to you promptly, and for most jobs we'll arrange a time to look at the work in person so the quote is accurate and upfront.

How does your pricing work?

We believe in transparent pricing. Our quotes are detailed and provided up front, so you know exactly what to expect with no surprises. We talk through the cost before any work starts, and if anything changes once we're on site we discuss it with you first rather than simply adding charges.

Do you do small jobs as well as large ones?

Yes. No job is too small — from replacing a single power point or light fitting through to full switchboard upgrades, commercial fit-outs and body corporate work. Many of our customers first call us for a small job and then keep us as their regular electrician.

What makes BJL Electrical Solutions different?

Our mission is to raise the standard of the electrical trade, and we run the business by three values: loyalty, fairness and professionalism. In practice that means turning up on time, communicating clearly, doing meticulous work with no shortcuts, and cleaning up properly — the things our customers mention again and again in their reviews.

Do you clean up after the work is finished?

Always. Leaving your home or business clean and tidy is part of doing the job properly. Our customers regularly comment that we vacuum up dust, remove old fittings and packaging, and leave the space as we found it — sometimes cleaner.

Can you help during a home renovation?

Definitely. We work on renovations regularly, handling everything from new lighting, power points and fans to switchboard upgrades and data cabling. Bringing us in early means the electrical work is planned properly and coordinated with the rest of your project.

Air Conditioning Installation

Do you install air conditioning across Brisbane?

Yes. We install split-system and reverse-cycle air conditioning for homes and businesses right across Brisbane and the surrounding suburbs, from the inner-city out to the northside and southside. When you get in touch we'll confirm we cover your suburb and arrange a time to look at the space, check the wiring and recommend the right unit and location for the room you want cooled.

How does pricing work for an air conditioning installation?

Air conditioning installs are quoted job by job because the cost depends on the size of the unit, where it needs to go and how far the wiring and pipework has to run. We give you a clear, itemised quote up front before any work starts, so you know exactly what's included. There are no surprise charges added later — if something changes once we're on site, we talk it through with you first.

Which air conditioning brands do you install?

We install units from trusted, widely-supported brands including Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba. If you've already bought a unit we're happy to install it; if you haven't, we can talk through which brand and capacity suits your room size, budget and how often you'll run it.

Can a reverse-cycle unit heat my home in winter?

Yes. A reverse-cycle split system both cools in summer and heats during Brisbane's cooler months, which makes it a year-round comfort solution rather than a summer-only one. We'll help you choose a unit sized correctly for the room so it runs efficiently in both modes instead of working harder than it needs to.

Will you remove and dispose of my old air conditioner?

If we're replacing an existing unit we can take the old one away and tidy up the site once the new system is installed and tested. Just let us know when you book so we can plan for it. We always clean up after ourselves — something our customers mention often in their reviews.

How long does an air conditioning installation take?

Most single split-system installations are completed within a day, though it depends on the property, access and how much new wiring is required. When we quote the job we'll give you a realistic timeframe and a start date, and we aim to finish within the window we've agreed so your day isn't disrupted.

Do I need an electrician or an air conditioning specialist?

Air conditioning installation involves electrical work that legally must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and the unit also needs to be installed correctly to run safely and efficiently. As a fully licensed electrical contractor we handle the whole job properly — wiring, mounting and commissioning — so it's compliant and ready to use.

Ceiling Fan Installation

Is it legal to install my own ceiling fan?

No — in Queensland it is against the law for an unlicensed person to install a ceiling fan, because it involves connecting to your home's wiring. A DIY attempt can lead to electric shock and may also affect your insurance. Our team is fully licensed, so your fan is installed safely and correctly the first time.

How is a ceiling fan installation priced?

We quote each fan installation based on what the job actually involves — whether there's existing wiring and a suitable point, how high the ceiling is, and how many fans you're having done. You get an upfront quote before we start, and because we often install several fans in one visit, doing them together usually works out better value.

Can you install a fan where there isn't one already?

Yes. If there's no existing fan point we can run new wiring and install a switch so the fan works exactly where you want it. We'll take a look during the quote, explain what's needed to get power to that spot, and include it all in the one clear price.

Do you install ceiling fans on verandahs and outdoor areas?

We do. Outdoor and verandah fans need to be rated for those conditions, so we'll make sure the fan you've chosen is suitable, or recommend one that is. Outdoor entertaining areas are one of the most popular spots we install fans in, especially heading into the warmer months.

Can you replace an old ceiling fan with a new one?

Absolutely. Swapping an old or noisy fan for a new model is a quick job for a licensed electrician — we remove the old unit, check the existing mounting and wiring are sound, and install the new fan. Many of our customers have us replace several tired fans across the house in a single visit.

Do modern ceiling fans really make a difference?

They can. Modern fans run quietly, move air efficiently and many include a reversible 'winter mode' that pushes warm air back down in cooler months. Used alongside or instead of air conditioning, a well-placed fan is an energy-efficient way to keep a room comfortable.

How long does it take to install a ceiling fan?

A straightforward fan swap where wiring already exists usually takes under an hour. Installing a fan in a new location, or fitting several around the home, takes longer — we'll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote so you can plan your day.

Lighting Installation

What types of lighting can you install?

We install the full range of home lighting — LED downlights, oyster lights, spotlights, pendant lights, wall lights and outdoor lighting. We also test and certify emergency and exit lighting. Whether you're after better everyday light or a feature look for a renovation, we can talk through the options room by room.

How do you charge for lighting installation?

Lighting work is quoted on the job in front of us — the number of fittings, whether wiring already exists, ceiling access and the type of lights all affect the cost. We give you a detailed, upfront quote so you can see exactly what's included, and there are no hidden extras once the job is underway.

Should I switch my old lights to LED?

For most homes, yes. LED lighting uses far less power than older halogen or incandescent fittings and lasts much longer, so it cuts running costs and replacements. We can swap existing fittings over to LED and help you choose the right colour temperature and brightness for each room.

Can you help me plan lighting for a renovation?

Definitely. Lighting does a lot for how a finished room looks and feels, so it's worth planning early. We're happy to walk through your space, suggest a mix of downlights, feature pendants and task lighting, and coordinate the wiring so everything's ready when the room comes together.

Do you install outdoor and security lighting?

Yes — we install outdoor lighting for entertaining areas, paths and entries, as well as sensor and security lighting. Good outdoor lighting makes a home safer and more usable at night, and we'll make sure fittings are suitable for outdoor conditions.

Can you fix or replace a single broken light?

Of course. No job is too small — whether it's one failed downlight, a flickering fitting or a globe you can't safely reach, we can sort it. If a fitting keeps failing we'll check the cause rather than just replacing the globe, so the problem is actually solved.

Do you test emergency and exit lights?

We do. Emergency and exit lighting needs regular testing and certification to stay compliant, particularly in commercial and shared buildings. We can test, repair and certify these fittings as part of our lighting and maintenance work.

Switchboard & Mains Upgrades

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Older Brisbane homes often still have switchboards with ceramic fuses, which don't meet the current Australian Standard (AS3000) and can be a safety risk. Other signs include frequent tripping, no safety switches, scorch marks or simply not having room to add new circuits. If you're unsure, we can inspect it and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is needed.

Do you replace the whole switchboard or just upgrade it?

Wherever possible we recommend upgrading your existing switchboard rather than replacing it entirely — it's usually the more cost-effective option and still brings the board up to a safe, compliant standard. If a full replacement genuinely is the better choice we'll explain why, so you can make an informed decision.

How is a switchboard or mains upgrade quoted?

Every board and home is different, so we quote after looking at what's there. The cost depends on the condition of the existing board, how many circuits and safety switches are needed, and the state of the mains supply. You'll get a clear, itemised quote up front before any work begins.

What is a mains or sub-mains upgrade?

Your mains is the supply that feeds power from the grid into your property, and sub-mains feed power to separate areas or buildings. If you're adding major appliances, air conditioning or a second dwelling, the existing supply may not be adequate. We assess your power needs and upgrade the mains or sub-mains so your home has a robust, reliable supply.

Will an upgrade add safety switches to my home?

A modern switchboard upgrade is the ideal time to make sure your home has safety switches (RCDs) protecting its circuits. Safety switches cut the power in a fraction of a second if they detect a fault, which protects your family from electric shock. We'll make sure your upgraded board meets current safety requirements.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most domestic switchboard upgrades are completed within a day, with the power off for only part of that time. We'll confirm the timeframe when we quote and let you know what to expect on the day, so any interruption to your power is planned and brief.

Is a switchboard upgrade worth doing before a renovation?

Yes — if you're renovating or adding circuits for new appliances, lighting or air conditioning, it's the right time to upgrade. A modern board gives you the capacity and safety the new work needs, and doing it together avoids paying twice for access and call-outs.

Smoke Alarm Installation

Do you install smoke alarms to the Queensland standard?

Yes. We assess, install, maintain and replace smoke alarm systems in line with the Australian Standard and Queensland's legislation requirements. We'll check your home's current alarms, explain where alarms are required and how they should be interconnected, and make sure your installation is compliant.

How does pricing work for smoke alarm installation?

We provide free quotes for smoke alarm work and price each job on what your home needs — the number of alarms, whether they're hard-wired and interconnected, and access. You'll get the quote up front with no obligation, and no hidden costs once the job is booked.

Why do smoke alarms need to be interconnected?

Interconnected alarms all sound together the moment one detects smoke, so you're warned no matter where the fire starts in the home. That early warning is critical at night. We can upgrade older standalone alarms to a compliant interconnected system throughout the house.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Smoke alarms have a limited service life and should be replaced periodically even if they still beep when tested — the sensors degrade over time. If you're not sure how old yours are, we can check them, advise whether they're still within their service life and replace any that aren't.

Can you check the smoke alarms in a rental property?

Yes. Smoke alarm compliance is an important responsibility for rental properties, and we can assess, install and maintain alarms so a property meets its obligations. We work with homeowners, landlords and body corporate managers on this.

What happens if you're running late to my job?

We pride ourselves on punctuality — for our smoke alarm service we keep to the schedule we've agreed, and if we're late, the job is on us. Turning up when we say we will is one of the things our customers mention most in their reviews.

Do you install smoke alarms during renovations?

We do — it's the ideal time. If walls or ceilings are open during a renovation, hard-wiring and interconnecting alarms is far simpler. We can coordinate the smoke alarm work with the rest of your electrical job so the finished home is safe and compliant.

Data Cabling

What does residential data cabling involve?

Data cabling is the wired backbone behind your home's internet, entertainment systems and smart devices. It involves running structured cabling to the rooms that need a fast, stable connection and terminating it at proper outlets. A wired connection avoids the lag and drop-outs that wireless can suffer, especially in larger homes.

How is data cabling priced?

We quote data cabling on the job — the number of points, the cable runs involved and access through the property all affect the cost. After looking at your home we give you a clear, upfront quote covering everything, so there are no surprises once the work is underway.

Why choose wired data over wi-fi?

Wi-fi is convenient but a wired data point gives you the fastest, most consistent connection with no interference or drop-outs. For home offices, gaming, streaming devices and smart-home hubs, a dedicated cabled point is far more reliable. Many homes use a mix — cabling to the key devices and wi-fi for everything else.

Can you add data points during a renovation?

Yes, and a renovation is the perfect time. With walls or ceilings open, running cabling is straightforward and tidy. We'll help you plan which rooms should have data points — home offices, media areas, study nooks — so the finished home is ready for the way you use technology.

Do you install cabling for security cameras?

We do. Running data cabling for security cameras gives them a stable, powered connection that's more dependable than wireless. We can run the cabling as part of a broader data job or on its own — several of our customers have us cable both their network and their cameras together.

Will the cabling be hidden?

Wherever the property allows, we run cabling discreetly through walls, ceilings and cavities so outlets sit neatly flush in the room. We take pride in tidy workmanship — cleaning up properly and leaving a neat finish is something we're known for.

Can you set up a home office network?

Yes. We can cable a home office for a fast, reliable wired connection and set up data points for your computer, printer and other devices. A properly cabled office removes the frustration of wi-fi drop-outs during video calls and large file transfers.

Test & Tagging

What is test and tagging?

Test and tagging is the process of inspecting electrical appliances and leads, testing them for electrical safety, and attaching a tag showing they've passed and when they were checked. It identifies faulty or unsafe items before they cause a shock or fire, giving you confidence that the appliances in use are safe.

How is test and tagging priced?

We quote test and tagging based on how many appliances and leads need checking. For homes it's usually a straightforward job; for businesses it depends on the number of items and the site. Either way you get a clear quote up front so you know the cost before we start.

Why does test and tagging matter for my home?

Electrical appliances are part of daily life but can become hazards if a lead is damaged or an item develops a fault you can't see. Test and tagging picks up those problems early, which reduces the risk of electric shock or an electrical fire and gives you peace of mind about the equipment you use every day.

How often should appliances be tested and tagged?

Testing frequency depends on the environment and how the equipment is used — items in tougher conditions need checking more often than those in a quiet home or office. When we test your appliances we can advise a sensible re-test interval for your situation so you stay on top of it.

Can you test and tag for a business or workplace?

Yes. We carry out test and tagging for workplaces across Brisbane, helping businesses keep their equipment safe and their records in order. We can work around your operating hours so testing doesn't disrupt the working day.

Do you tag new appliances?

We can. Even new equipment is often required to be tested or at least tagged before first use in many workplaces. We'll check items, tag them appropriately and let you know what's needed so your records are complete.

What happens if an appliance fails the test?

If an item fails, we tag it as unsafe and let you know so it can be taken out of use before it causes harm. Where it makes sense we can advise whether the item can be repaired — for example a damaged lead — or whether it should be replaced.

Commercial & Body Corporate

What commercial electrical work do you do?

We install, repair and maintain electrical systems in commercial properties including offices, retail stores, factories and warehouses. Commercial systems are more complex than domestic ones, so they need a licensed contractor experienced in that work. We also help businesses cut running costs with energy-efficient lighting and appliances.

Do you provide electrical services for body corporate properties?

Yes. We specialise in the electrical needs of body corporate properties — apartment complexes, townhouses and other shared spaces. We handle common-area lighting, maintenance and repairs, working to keep shared electrical systems safe, efficient and compliant for everyone in the complex.

How is commercial electrical work quoted?

Commercial and body corporate work is always quoted on the specific job. After understanding the scope — the site, the systems involved and what you need done — we provide a clear, detailed quote up front. For body corporate managers we're happy to itemise work so it's easy to present to the committee.

Are you licensed and qualified for commercial work?

Yes. In Queensland, electrical work must be carried out by appropriately licensed electricians, and we hold a current electrical contractor's licence. We have experience leading large electrical projects across Brisbane and Sydney, so we're well equipped for complex commercial jobs.

Can you help reduce our energy costs?

We can. Switching to energy-efficient LED lighting and more efficient equipment is one of the simplest ways for a business to cut electricity costs. We can review your current setup, recommend practical upgrades and carry out the work, so the savings start showing up on your bills.

Can you work outside business hours?

Yes — for commercial sites we can often schedule work outside trading hours or around your operations so the job causes as little disruption as possible. Let us know your constraints when you get in touch and we'll plan the work around them.

Do you handle ongoing maintenance for commercial sites?

We do. As well as one-off installations and repairs, we carry out ongoing electrical maintenance, testing and repairs to keep commercial and body corporate sites running safely. Regular maintenance helps catch small issues before they become costly failures.
