Why Standard Carpet Cleaning Doesn't Work on Pet Urine

When a pet urinates on carpet, the liquid soaks through to the backing and underlay. As it dries, the urea and bacteria form alkaline crystals. Standard carpet cleaning with hot water and alkaline detergents can actually reactivate these crystals — spreading the contamination and temporarily intensifying the smell.

Eliminating pet urine requires a targeted treatment that neutralises the alkaline crystal structure before extraction. Andrew uses two types of treatment depending on the age and severity of the contamination:

Treatment Approach

  • Acidic treatment — neutralises fresh to moderately aged urine crystals, restoring pH balance so stain and odour can be fully extracted
  • Bio-enzyme treatment — biological enzymes break down the organic compounds in older or more severe deposits, particularly effective for persistent cat urine odour
  • UV detection — UV light reveals hidden urine deposits invisible to the naked eye, so every contaminated area is treated — not just the obvious ones
  • Flush and extraction — professional hot water extraction flushes treated areas and removes residue from carpet fibres and backing

The Treatment Process

1

UV Inspection

Andrew uses UV light to map all urine deposits — including those not yet producing obvious odour.

2

Pre-Treatment

Targeted acidic or bio-enzyme treatment is applied to each deposit and left to dwell, neutralising the alkaline crystals.

3

Hot Water Extraction

Truck-mounted steam cleaning flushes and extracts the treated deposits, removing stain, bacteria, and odour-causing compounds.

4

Deodorising Rinse

A final deodorising rinse leaves carpets fresh with no residue. Safe for pets once dry — typically 2–4 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does pet urine smell get worse after regular carpet cleaning?

Regular carpet cleaning uses hot water and alkaline detergents which can reactivate the urine crystals and make the smell temporarily worse. Specialist acidic urine treatment neutralises the crystals before steam cleaning so the odour is eliminated rather than spread.

Can old, dried pet urine stains be removed?

Yes — dried urine forms alkaline crystals that can be neutralised with targeted acidic treatments. Older stains may require multiple treatments or leave a residual shadow on lighter carpets, but the odour can almost always be eliminated.

Is it safe for pets after treatment?

Yes. Once the carpet is dry (typically 2–4 hours), it is completely safe for pets and children. The treatment products used are biodegradable and leave no harmful residue.

How many treatments will I need?

Most single-incident stains require one treatment. Heavily saturated areas where urine has soaked through to the underlay or subfloor may require two visits and potentially underlay replacement.

Do you treat cat urine differently to dog urine?

Yes — cat urine is more concentrated and contains additional compounds that require bio-enzyme treatment rather than purely acidic treatment. Andrew assesses each case and selects the appropriate chemistry.

Can you detect urine deposits I can't see?

Yes. Andrew uses UV detection to locate hidden urine deposits that are invisible to the naked eye and not yet producing an obvious smell — treating them before they become a larger problem.
