What’s That Noise in the Ceiling Rats vs. Possums in Brisbane Roofs

It’s 2:00 AM, the house is completely quiet, and suddenly you hear it: a noise coming directly from your ceiling. As the April nights get colder in Brisbane, the roof voids of our homes become prime real estate for local wildlife. But before you panic, you need to identify exactly who has moved in. Usually, the culprits are either possums or rats.

Because you can’t see through your ceiling plaster, your ears are your best diagnostic tool:

The Possum Profile: Possums are surprisingly heavy. If you hear loud, slow thumping, heavy footsteps, or a deep, guttural coughing sound, you likely have a Brushtail Possum. The Rodent Profile: Rats and mice are lighter but frantic. If you hear light, rapid scurrying, frantic scratching in one specific corner, or the distinct sound of gnawing and chewing on timber, you are dealing with rodents.

Why Rodents Require Immediate Action

While a possum might keep you awake, rodents actively destroy your home. Rats must constantly gnaw to grind down their growing teeth. In a roof void, their favorite chew toys are PVC pipes, timber beams, and—most dangerously—electrical wiring. Rodents in the ceiling are a leading cause of unexplained house fires in Queensland.

Additionally, rodents urinate and defecate constantly as they travel, destroying your ceiling insulation and creating a severe health hazard that can seep through your plasterboard.

If you suspect rats, throwing cheap supermarket baits into your manhole is a mistake. Unsecured baits are dangerous to pets, and poisoned rats will often die deep inside your wall cavities, leaving a terrible odor that lasts for weeks.

At McKenna Pest Control, we bring over 40 years of local expertise to the table. We use professional, lockable bait stations and strategic placement to draw the rodents out safely and effectively, eliminating the colony without the lingering smell.
